Guest speaker Dr. Zhonging Chen, Professor of History at University of  Victoria.   spoke on Victoria’s role  as a destination of Chinese migrants. Evidence of coins on Nootka Sound , Vancouver Island and other evidences in BC. show Chinese contact  before Columbus’ landing in 1492.

Later  Victoria Chinese immigrants  played a key role   in raising funds for the  Republic of China by the  Chinese Empire Reform Association in 1899 encouraged by  visits from   Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

The evening was enhanced with  another  excellent dinner  by Lioness Vicky at Golden City.

The evening book sales resulted in a $365 deposit to  Diane’s chosen foster home.

Health

 Chinese Seniors’ Needs in Health Care and Housing  was a public presentation of the findings of the consultants hired by the Ministry of International Trade (Lioness Lynne project manager), to address the provincial government’s historical wrongs to the Chinese Canadians.  The study’s purpose was to  determine the community needs and wants with respect to Chinese Seniors’ health care and housing requirements.   About 180 people gathered to hear the findings. Lioness were represented by Lioness Lynne , Ellen and Amanda .

“Angel Flight of British Columbia was founded in 2001 with the purpose of easing the burden of patients whom must travel long distances to their medical treatment centres by utilizing a network of volunteer pilots, aircraft owners, and ground support.”

Lioness contributed to their  vital local  service .

Victoria Chinatown Care Foundation

“Originally built by the Chinese community, in January 1982, replacing the old Chinese hospital. The Centre features a spacious lounge on the first floor as well as a lounge on each resident floor. There is also a resident garden that provides therapeutic activity. We provide services in Chinese and English, and Chinese foods, activities, and care are provided in a culturally sensitive way.”

Board members  Lioness Grace, Amanda and Annette. Lioness support and contribute to this important seniors program and facility.

 

 

 

Spot vision better

 

Spot Vision Screener District 19 Lions Club International.

Lions Club International is funding the use of  hand-held Welch Allyn Spot auto-refraction  ,  as part of its vision mandate.It is being implemented in schools across Canada and the USA.

” The spot screener is a vision-screening device that is 85-90% accurate in detecting vision problems. It takes only moments per child, requires no preparation or medication, and is totally painless.”

The Victoria Chinatown Lioness donated funds towards the purchase of one screener for local use.

 

 

 

Miracle on Broad Street ” is about the children whose lives are changed by an act of kindness: gifts under the Christmas tree and food on the table, washing away the trappings of poverty, sadness, or loss, and inspiring them with memories they will keep for a lifetime.”

“Every year, the funds raised during Miracle on Broad Street enable us to supply each family with three bags of groceries and a grocery gift card for perishable foods (such as meat, cheese, and milk)–enough for a wonderful Christmas dinner and to help with meals while the children are home for the holidays. Families also receive gifts of toys and clothing for every child aged 17 and under.”

Spearheaded by Lioness Pei Mei, The Victoria Chinatown Lioness presented the second an annual  check to  add joy to local families in need.

 

 

 

Dandelion Society and Mustard Seed received mitts, socks, and toques collected and delivered by Lioness Susanne Lioness  at the annual Christmas brunch organized by Lioness Pei Mei  and Nelles .
